Ergotism unresponsive to multiple therapeutic modalities, including sodium nitroprusside, resulting in limb loss.
Unlike epidemics in past centuries, patients suffering from peripheral vascular ischemia related to ergotism now rarely lose a limb because of vasodilator therapies. We report a patient with ischemia from ergotamine tartrate who failed to recover with medical therapy, resulting in limb amputation.
متن کاملTherapeutic Interchange of Clevidipine For Sodium Nitroprusside in Cardiac Surgery.
BACKGROUND Generic price inflation has resulted in rising acquisition costs for sodium nitroprusside (SNP), an agent historically described as the drug of choice for the treatment of perioperative hypertension in cardiac surgery. PURPOSE To describe the implementation and cost avoidance achieved by utilizing clevidipine as an alternative to SNP in cardiac surgery patients at a 520-bed communi...
متن کاملNonconventional therapeutic modalities in refractory angina pectoris
Abstract Despite sophisticated conventional medical treatment and the continued development and improvement of coronary revascularization modalities in recent years, a significant number of patients still suffer from refractory angina pectoris and cannot be successfully managed. Advances in therapeutic options have led to an increase in the average of life expectancy even in such ...
متن کاملSodium Nitroprusside Injection
Except when used briefly or at low (< 2 mcg/kg/min) infus ion rates , sodium nitropruss ide gives rise to important quantities of cyanide ion, which can reach toxic, potentially lethal levels (see WARNINGS). The usual dose rate is 0.5 to 10 mcg/kg/min, but infus ion at the maximum dose rate should never las t more than 10 minutes . If blood pressure has not been adequately controlled after 10 m...
متن کامل0354. Effects of sodium nitroprusside in addition to therapeutic hypothermia after experimental cardiac arrest
Methods We studied 8 anesthetized, invasively monitored and mechanically ventilated domestic pigs, randomized into two groups (n=4): TH without or with SNP. After 3 min of untreated ventricular fibrillation, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was started in all animals and continued until return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC); defibrillation was performed 3 minutes after the start of CPR. H...
